Sleepless in Skagway

I've been in Skagway four days now and I'm only just starting to get adjusted to it. As beautiful as Alaska is, it's also big, vast, and lonely, and that loneliness has been gnawing at me all week. It's not as piercing now as it was the first couple of days, so maybe I'm finally adapting to things. It is insanely beautiful up here. The mountains around the town are all snow-capped and the temperatures have been in the 60's the last couple of days. It's still not the official start of tourist season yet and everything's still shut down, so there are only a limited number of things to do right now. The first cruise ships come in Monday and everything will be off the hook from then on out.

I started my job Tuesday and am loving it. It's so peaceful here that people are laid-back and easygoing, whereas my job in Alabama was almost unbearable because almost everyone was uptight and stuck-up and everybody rode everybody else about everything. None of that up here. I work with two other guys in the kitchen and we have a blast! We joke and kid around and we're allowed to take breaks pretty much whenever we want. I never thought I would enjoy a job, but I actually look forward to coming in everyday. I don't know if I'll feel that way when we get swamped with 50,000 people, but we'll see.

I'm at work right now on their wireless connection and my shift starts in a few minutes, so I've gotta go. I'll post pictures ASAP.

Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Also, you may want to set the site to allow anonymous posting. I happened to have a Google login, but who knows about anyone else.
